Over the years, I've seen many plans for homemade jigs that utilize a hardwood runner that fits in the miter-gauge slot.But, because wood shrinks and expands depending on the humidity, the runner's fit and, hence, the jig's accuracy will vary.
To correct the problem, cut the runner a bit undersize so that it is loose in the slot.Then install four 1/2-in-long brass screws in countersunk holes along one edge of the runner.You can adjust the screws to get a perfect fit, regardless of the humidity.
The brass screws won't wear the sides of the slot and are easily replaced if they wear out...
